First Hurricane Florence deaths: mother, infant killed by tree

Hurricane Florence flooding

The powerful Category 1 storm is making its way south along the Carolina coast hours after making technical landfall early Friday morning.

The centre of the storm made landfall at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, with gales of up to 90mph (150 km/h).

Peggy Perry, who was rescued by another group in New Bern, said rising water forced her into the upper level of her home.

Forecasters have been predicting catastrophic flash flooding.

More than a dozen counties in North Carolina are under a tornado watch, with officials also warning of a chance of hail.

About 1.7 million people in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are under voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders and millions of others live in areas likely to be affected by the storm.

Utility companies said millions were expected to lose power and that restoring it could take weeks.

As the climate warms, the way air moves through the atmosphere can become disrupted, possibly blocking these types of storms in place more often.

The White House said on Friday that President Donald Trump would travel to the region next week unless his trip would disrupt clean-up and rescue efforts.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km).

"Florence is an uninvited brute who doesn't want to leave", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper told NPR's Morning Edition.

Andre Schurrle did threaten from distance but City goalkeeper Ederson tipped over. "At the end, the result is completely fair". Fulham had arrived with a clear intention to take the game to City , but after that early setback, the task was beyond them.

More than ten people have been killed by Florence and her impact as the remnants of the storm moved through the area Saturday. Significant weakening was expected over the weekend.

Helene was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm Thursday.

The state's transportation secretary, James Trogdon, said the state may see "flood events" that normally only occur once every 1,000 years.

This is according to data as of 5 a.m. EST from tweets North and SC emergency management agencies.

Officials have warned people against entering attics, so as to avoid drowning, unless they have a means to cut through to the roof.

A 68-year-old man and his wife died in a house fire in Cumberland County, NC on Friday, according to a release from the NC State Emergency Response team. The Wilmington airport had a wind gust clocked at 105 miles per hour (169 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958, the weather service said.

The rainfall is forecast to reach up to 40 inches in some areas over the next several days.

Whether residents left their homes, sought refuge in a shelter or are hunkering down, the weather service has bad news: After creeping inland, Florence "is expected to slow down even more today and tonight".

Many thousand more power customers were without electricity in northeastern South Carolina Friday night.

Florence is one of four named storms in the Atlantic.
