Hurricane Florence Evacuations Expand, With 'Disaster At Doorstep'

Marshall vs. South Carolina game cancelled due to Hurricane Florence

An updated track at 5 a.m. Wednesday update shows the storm changing course and moving more into SC after the hurricane would make landfall.

A life-threatening storm surge is now highly likely along portions of the coastlines of SC and North Carolina, and a storm surge warning is in effect for a portion of this area.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said in its latest update that Hurricane Florence now has 120 mph winds and is a Category 3 storm, located 385 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina. The Wilmington area can now expect 9-to-13-foot storm surges if Florence's peak impact coincides with high tide, Brunswick County coastal areas west of Southport can expect 6-to-9-foot surges.

The Davis' say they're not nervous about their choice to not evacuate because they've fared well during four previous storms, including Hurricane Matthew.

Florence remains to be a powerful category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. Then it is likely to hover along the coast Saturday, pushing up to 13 feet (nearly 4 meters) of storm surge and unloading water on both states.

The SCDOT map shows congestion starting one mile north of the Georgia border and continuing to the Mile 34 marker in SC.

Steady streams of vehicles full of people and belongings flowed inland Tuesday as North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tried to convince everyone on North Carolina's coast to flee.

Forecasters said that given the storm's size and sluggish track, it could cause epic damage akin to what the Houston area saw during Hurricane Harvey just over a year ago, with floodwaters swamping homes and businesses and washing over industrial waste sites and hog-manure ponds.

That will be in addition to a storm surge that could reach nine feet. "This storm will bring destruction to North Carolina ", Gov. Amparo did not specify how many modular units were on hand to respond to Hurricane Florence , but said it was "more than 2,000".

Computer simulations - especially the often star-performing European model - push the storm further south, even into SC and Georgia.

"Heed the warnings", said Byard, adding there was "well over $20 billion" in FEMA's disaster relief fund.

An estimated 10 million people live in areas expected to be placed under a hurricane or storm advisory, said Marc Chenard of the US Weather Prediction Centre.

Wilmington, North Carolina, just north of where the hurricane is expected to come ashore, was sunny around midday yesterday as the town appeared to be emptying. Workers are being brought in from the Midwest and Florida to help in the storm's aftermath, it said.

"I'm not going to put our personnel in harm's way, especially for people that we've already told to evacuate", Wrightsville Beach Police Chief Dan House said.

Winds will be at least 100 miles per hour as the storm approaches the coast.

"There's really not a lot of good news", NOAA flight director Paul Flaherty said on "Shepard Smith Reporting". "Now it might be time for the exam", he said.
