Hurricane Florence Leaves 5 Dead In US, Communities Flooded

Morehead City, North Carolina, had received 23 inches (58 centimeters) of rain by Friday night with more torrents on the way. Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale with 120-mph winds as of Thursday, but dropped to a Category 1 hurricane before coming ashore.

Early on Friday, South Carolina emergency officials said there was still time, "but not a lot of time" for people to leave flood-prone areas.

It remains a Category 1 hurricane with top sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), but a gust of 112 miles per hour (180 kph) was reported just offshore.

Florence drove almost 1 million people from their homes and almost 700,000 lost power. "So we're talking several days of power outages where they've already begun", Joseph said.

As Florence moves further inland over the coming days, the storm is expected to gradually weaken.

Top winds were holding at 90 miles per hour - that's just a Category 1 hurricane - but some communities were already submerged in more than six feet of water as the storm drenched the coast.

The National Hurricane Centre said Florence will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a right hook to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of next week. The storm was once a powerful Category 4 storm but became a slow-moving Category 1 storm when it made landfall near Wrightsville, North Carolina, on Friday.

Hurricane Florence is thrashing the Carolina coast with devastating flooding and hurricane-force winds.

This is expected to cause "catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding".

People are rescued by members of the US Army during the passing of Hurricane Florence in the town of New Bern, North Carolina, US.

The city of Jacksonville's statement says people have been moved to the city's public safety center as officials work to find a more permanent shelter. The figure for SC was 170,000 customers.

Wright is far from the only resident in the Carolinas that chose to weather Hurricane Florence, which has since been downgraded to a tropical storm, though many who chose to stay are starting to reconsider their decision of sticking around for what North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper called a "1,000-year event". North of the landfall, another 150 people near the town of New Bern required rescue from floods along the Neuse River.

She estimated 441,000 people have already evacuated because of the storm.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the city tweeted during the height of the storm.

Life-threatening storm surge is being reported along the coast of the Carolinas.

Right now, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center is predicting that Florence will become a tropical storm tomorrow (Sept. 15) over SC, continue northwest to eastern Kentucky, then swing northeast and track over most of New England early next week.

The storm's movement, not its strength, has forecasters and officials anxious.

The storm is likely to bring significant rain to the Carolinas, where some places could see upwards of 20 inches, the update said.
