Kavanaugh sex hearing echoes 1991 showdown, but is US…

A generation after Clarence Thomas the Senate heads for another battle over judging allegations of sexual misconduct

"All of this is really something that I don't think can be avoided if you really want to get to the truth, if that's the goal of this hearing", Hill said Wednesday, after writing a similar New York Times op-ed this week urging lawmakers not to repeat the mistakes they made 27 years ago.

Thomas ultimately prevailed by a narrow vote of 52-48, and sits on the Supreme Court to this day.

Many Republicans and conservative voices have already labeled the proceedings a last-ditch bid to derail Kavanaugh's court appointment.

Hill, whose credibility and reputation were on trial during the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas, had urged the Senate to establish a protocol to assess sexual misconduct claims that emerge during the confirmation process. He has called on Texas voters to support progressive Democratic Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke, suggested that Trump nominate Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, and attacked Nikki Haley for criticizing a book that falsely intimated she had slept with Trump. That may turn out to be true, but only if at least one other woman comes forward with similar charges.

"I have never done anything like what the accuser describes - to her or to anyone".

"#MeToo gave courage to women, and some men, to speak up about sexual harassment and abuse". It revived a sense of shame. The lawmaker felt "we must hear from this woman". And many simply dismiss her claims because she did not come forward sooner.

Back when they signed the letter, it was an anonymous allegation.

Jennifer Wexton, a Democrat running for Congress in Northern Virginia, tweeted that she believed Ford, while Sean Casten, a Democrat looking to take a suburban Chicago seat, wrote that any senator who votes for Kavanaugh after these allegations "is endorsing his behavior".

She said of the alleged Kavanaugh assault back in their 1980s high school days, "I thought he might inadvertently kill me". The White House, so far, has stood by Kavanaugh.

Republicans are still counting on the Senate to confirm Kavanaugh and provide Trump with a second successful nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. They spun the allegations as a last-ditch Democratic attempt to hold up the confirmation.

After explaining that the Senate can't tell an executive branch agency what to do, Grassley granted that, in Anita Hill's case, the White House "directed the Federal Bureau of Investigation to conduct a handful of interviews regarding Professor Hill's allegations" regarding then-nominee Clarence Thomas. And after Hill's allegations were leaked publicly, he wrote, "we did not ask the FBI to conduct an investigation".

In a statement issued Friday, Hill said, "I have seen firsthand what happens when such a process is weaponized against an accuser, and no one should have to endure that again".

"Now, in the #MeToo era, men get it and have lost their jobs for it. That context will no doubt influence how the current drama develops, just as will today's intense partisanship and Republicans' grip on the Senate".
