Just today, the Pope authorized an investigation into claims that a West Virginia bishop - whose retirement Francis just happened to accept today as well - sexually harassed adults. This comes in the wake of a Pennsylvania grand jury report documenting the sexual abuse and assaults of more than 1,000 children by hundreds of Catholic priests.
The report quoted a leaked copy of the study, which was compiled by three German universities.
Authors of the study also warned that the true scale of the abuse may be greater as some documents were "destroyed or manipulated".
If the state legislature approves, Kentucky will be the ninth US state to have an attorney general investigation into Catholic clerical sex abuse and the cover-ups by Church leaders.
The leaked study was published on the day that Pope Francis, who has made several attempts to tackle a spreading sexual abuse crisis that has badly tarnished the Church's image, summoned senior bishops from around the world to the Vatican to discuss the protection of minors.
The Vatican had no immediate comment on the Spiegel report.
According to the leaked research, every sixth case was a rape and at least 1,670 clergy were involved.
The aim of the study is to shed light on "this dark side of our Church, for the sake of those affected, but also for us ourselves to see the errors and to do everything to prevent them from being repeated". "We are dismayed and ashamed by it", Bishop Stephan Ackermann said in a written statement to CNN responding to reports of the leak.
Spiegel Online and Die Zeit said the report they obtained concluded that the majority of victims were boys aged 13 or younger, 969 of whom were altar boys. While these received minimal sanctions or none, other accused priests often were relocated to other parishes.
More than 3,600 children were sexually assaulted by Catholic priests in Germany over almost seven decades, local media reported on Wednesday (Sept 12), citing a study commissioned by the German Bishops Conference.
The study called on the Catholic Church to rethink its refusal to consecrate homosexual men and to view the celibacy obligation imposed on its clergy as "a potential risk factor", Der Spiegel reported.
