Trump dismisses second woman accusing Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct

Senate Holds Confirmation Hearing For Brett Kavanaugh To Be Supreme Court Justice

Her comments to the paper came as President Donald Trump and Republicans seek to confirm Kavanaugh to the nation's high court amid a pair of sexual assault allegations against the judge.

The allegations by Ford, who went public with her claims September 16, have caused cracks in what appeared to be a smooth path to confirmation for Kavanaugh.

Meanwhile, critics on the left have countered that, "It's not a trial - it's a job interview", as the Daily Kos put it.

McConnell was speaking alongside his fellow lawmakers on the Senate Floor Monday when he blasted the Democratic effort to block Brett Kavanaugh's nomination due to unsubstantiated claims during his time in high school and college. Ford has agreed to testify on Thursday, after almost a week of fraught negotiations with chair of the Senate judiciary committee, Chuck Grassley.

"I never sexual assaulted anyone", he said. "The New York Times has reported that just last week the person making the accusation was calling other classmates saying she was not sure that I had done this".

Having the lawyer pepper Christine Blasey Ford with questions might spare the Senate Republicans who run the committee of potentially bad optics of having the all male, aging committee members conducting a televised interrogation of a woman claiming assault.

'Making a Murderer' sequel to premiere in October
Meanwhile, in 2016, a judge ruled that Dassey's confession had been coerced by investigators, and ordered he be freed from prison. The first season followed Steven Avery , a Wisconsin man serving a life sentence for the murder of 25-year-old Teresa Halbech.

A second woman, Deborah Ramirez, accused Kavanaugh in an article published in the New Yorker magazine on Sunday of sexual misconduct during the 1983-84 academic year when both attended Yale University.

Kavanaugh has denied Ramirez's accusation and labeled it a "smear". And she said she was totally inebriated and she was all messed up, and she doesn't know it was him.

He added that he had watched the Fox News interview broadcast on Monday, which he said was "so truthful". Realistically, though, prosecuting under 18 USC 1001 for false statements would be as problematic as making a case against Kavanaugh, for the same reasons - the passage of nearly four decades of time.

The committee's top Democrat, Senator Dianne Feinstein, has called on Grassley to postpone Thursday's hearing in order to investigate Ramirez's accusations. Ramirez claims Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a Yale party decades ago. Graham said he believes there will be a vote on Kavanaugh shortly thereafter and he plans to support confirmation.

"Certainly we would be open to that, and that process could take place on Thursday", Sanders said during an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America, adding: "The president has been clear, let them speak".
