A U.S. Border Patrol agent suspected of killing four women was arrested early today after a fifth woman who had been abducted managed to escape from him and notify authorities, law enforcement officials said, describing the agent as a "serial killer".

Webb County district attorney Isidro Alaniz said: "We do consider this to be a serial killer". Sheriffs, DPS, LPD and Texas Rangers assisted and about 30 min later Ortiz was found on the 3rd floor of the Hotel behind the bed of a pick up truck. Authorities say one woman Ortiz had abducted escaped early Saturday morning and she was able to alert authorities.

Juan David Ortiz, an intel supervisor for the Border Patrol, was arrested overnight on Saturday in a parking lot in Laredo, Texas.

A senior US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official, Andrew Meehan, said in a statement that the agency was cooperating fully with the investigators. Alaniz said two of them were USA citizens but the nationalities of the other two were not yet known. All of the women were prostitutes, the district attorney told CNN affiliate KGNS-TV.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent is in custody in connection with the killings of four women and the kidnapping of a fifth in Texas. They also say that Ortiz was acting alone and no one else is suspected in these murders. According to local media reports in Laredo, 150 miles (240 km) southwest of San Antonio, they had been working as prostitutes.

The Texas Rangers, along with the Webb County Sheriff's office, launched an investigation after Melissa Ramirez, 29, a mother of two, was found slain September 4.

Ortiz was a 10-year veteran of the Border Patrol.
