UK Battles 2 Monkeypox Cases From Nigerian Travellers

A monkeypox patient in Africa where cases of the the viral infection are on the rise

A second person has been diagnosed with monkeypox in England, health officials confirmed.

Monkeypox, a rare virus, which health experts estimate is deadly in 10 percent of cases, was first diagnosed in England on Friday (September 7).

They have been transferred to Liverpool University Hospital for treatment.

The first patient to be diagnosed, a Nigerian national, is being treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London after being diagnosed with the rare viral infection while staying at a naval base in Cornwall.

Health officials said that although infection is usually mild, and the disease doesn't spread easily, severe cases can be fatal.

He has travelled to Nigeria recently from where he could have contracted the infection says the Public Health England.

"Once the patient was recognised as having a contagious condition, they were rapidly transferred to an isolation unit to ensure minimal risk to staff and patients", a spokesman for Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said.

Dr Mike Beadsworth, Clinical Director of the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Unit said: "We are treating a patient who has tested positive for monkeypox". "A rash can develop, often beginning on the face, then spreading to other parts of the body".

"It is very unusual to see two cases in such a relatively short space of time".

The infection can be spread when someone is in close contact with an infected person.

"A Technical Working Group coordinated by NCDC and comprising of partners from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF and U.S. Centres for Disease Control (US-CDC)".

"Initial symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion", PHE said.

Symptoms generally appear within ten days of exposure to the virus and can last for between two and five weeks.

For most individuals, vaccination against the smallpox virus will also prevent monkeypox.

It is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or humans or contaminated materials.

Monkeypox was first identified in monkeys by scientists in a laboratory in 1958. "Most people recover within several weeks", he added. It has been seen to affect humans rarely and some cases have been reported in central and western African countries.

"We therefore encourage any healthcare worker that suspects a case of Monkeypox, to reach out to their State Epidemiology team for appropriate action".

"Since the re-emergence of Monkeypox in Nigeria in September 2017, NCDC has continued to receive reports and respond to cases of the disease from states across the country", he said.
