Unknown gunmen 'kill, injure several' in attack on Iranian army parade

Attack on Iranian military parade in Ahvaz Iran

At least 24 four people have been killed and 53 wounded in an attack on a military parade in southwestern Iran, the country's official IRNA news agency reported, prompting President Hassan Rohani to pledge a "crushing" response to threats against the country.

Islamic State jihadists said via their propaganda mouthpiece Amaq that "Islamic State fighters attacked a gathering of Iranian forces" in Ahvaz, but the claim could not be verified and many recent IS claims have proved false.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) have been the sword and shield of clerical rule since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution.

This is the second time in September that Iran has closed at least one of its borders with Iraq following a security incident. Armed groups have engaged in sporadic clashes with security forces in the region. Iran has been deeply involved in the fight against Isis in Iraq and has aided embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad in his country's long war.

Gunmen opened fire at Revolutionary Guard troops and officials in the south-western city of Ahvaz.

Trump himself often offers quick responses on Twitter to suspected terrorist attacks, especially those that appear to have been perpetrated by the Islamic State extremist group.

The allegation will likely ratchet up tensions with Iran's rival Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies, which along with the United States have been working to isolate the Islamic Republic. A male voice can be heard repeatedly urging people to "get down".

Photos posted online showed a man in uniform carrying a crying child covered in blood.

The attack struck on Ahvaz's Quds, or Jerusalem, Boulevard.

Hundreds queue as Tesco opens first Jack´s discount stores
And he played down Jack's' financial significance to the group: "It's not a calculation that we're now doing", he said. The typical discount retailer has 7,500 SKUs (stock keeping units), compared to 30,000 for a traditional supermarket.

Attacks on the military are rare in Iran. State media in Saudi Arabia did not immediately acknowledge the attack, though a Saudi-linked, Farsi-language satellite channel based in the United Kingdom immediately carried an interview with an Ahvazi activist claiming Saturday's attack.

"These terrorists. were trained and organised by two".

However, Arab separatist groups in the region have launched attacks on oil pipelines there in the past and Iran. It cited an interview with a spokesperson for the Arab Freedom Movement of al-Ahvaz, who added that the "operation was part of our legitimate resistance and no ordinary civilian was targeted".

By noon the government was accusing "takfiri" militants and terrorists of the attack.

IS claimed its first attack in Iran on June 7, 2017, when gunmen and suicide bombers hit the parliament in Tehran and the shrine of revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, killing 17 people and injuring dozens. With its proximity to Iraq and the presence of a large Arab minority, the area has seen ethnic violence in the past.

The Pakistani government also issued a statement condemning the attack. Ahvaz itself suffers from high levels of air pollution and winters often bring critical levels of haze and dust in the city's air.

The attack killed at least 25 people and wounded over 60, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their U.S. masters accountable for such attacks.
