Hurricane Florence made landfall on Friday morning in Wrightsville, North Carolina bringing with it life-threatening storm surges and 90mph winds.

"Since the track is slower and the storm will reside in the area for a longer period of time rainfall amounts are expected to be extreme", Reid Hawkins, science officer for the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, said in a statement.

Government weather satellites captured this image of Hurricane Florence shortly after its landfall September 14, 2018.

Florence arrived at the Carolina coast as a Category 1 storm, with winds far slower than the fearsome 150 miles per hour of just a few days ago.

Yesterday, the European Space Agency released a short video of astronauts aboard the space station watching the storm out of the cupola armed with powerful cameras to capture its giant knot of storm clouds.

According to the National Hurricane Centre's 8am AST (1pm BST) advisory: "Florence remains a very large storm, which will produce risky impacts across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern SC for the next couple of days".

Response teams had already "brought in busloads" of rescued people from areas including Fairfield Harbor, New Bern, Adams Creek and Township 7, she said.

Surges and flooding will reportedly continue as it lashes SC.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper warned people: "Today the threat becomes a reality".

Later parts of the song, not in the brief snippet that featured in the post, include expletives and sexual references. The clip was posted to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram on Thursday before being taken down.

More than 60 people had to be pulled from a collapsing motel at the height of the storm.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the city of New Bern tweeted around 2 a.m.

More ominously, forecasters said the onslaught on the coast would last for hours and hours because Florence had come nearly to a dead halt at just 3 mph (6 kph) as of midday.

Journalist Brian L Kahn (@blkahn) tweeted: "This @weatherchannel visualization of storm surge is an incredible and sobering use of technology to show what hurricanes like Florence can do". Hurricane-force winds extended 90 miles (150 kilometers) from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds up to 195 miles (315 kilometers). "Florence may be weakening but will have a large storm surge".

The city warns that people "may need to move up to the second story" but tells them to stay put as "we are coming to get you". Hundreds more had to be rescued elsewhere from rising waters.

For people living inland in the Carolinas, the moment of maximum peril from flash flooding could arrive days later, because it takes time for rainwater to drain into rivers and for those streams to crest.

Four shelters were now open, Roberts said, adding that dispatchers received a call for 17 people stranded all on one street.

Duke said it had more than 20,000 personnel ready to start fixing outages as soon as conditions allowed, including over 8,000 from the Duke's Carolinas utilities, 1,700 from the Midwest, 1,200 from Florida and 9,400 from other utilities. Hundreds of thousands of people have evacuated the coast, more than 1500 United States flights have been cancelled, factories were shut and farmers rushed to save crops, poultry and pigs in anticipation of the storm. States of emergency have already been declared in both North and SC.
