(10:10 AM) County Confirms Detection Of West Nile Virus

Second death from West Nile recorded in western Missouri

Department of Public Health in Los Angeles County shared news information on the patient.

In 2017, a record of 27 deaths were documented among LA County's 268 cases.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles County health officials announced the first West Nile virus death of the year. West Nile can even cause altered mental status, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, inflammation of the brain, brain membrane and spinal cord or coma. The first frost for southcentral Pennsylvania appears to be a week or two away, according to Accuweather's extended forecast.

People are also advised to minimize any standing water around the house, which provides a breeding environment for more mosquitoes. Humans - and horses - get the disease when they're bitten by those mosquitoes.

Following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protocol, the Knox County Health Department will spray for mosquitoes in these areas on Thursday, Oct. 11 between 8:30 p.m. and 2 a.m., weather permitting, to reduce the Culex mosquito population and the risk of WNV spreading to humans, with follow-up sprayings on Oct. 25. The previous high after 2003 had been 60 cases with four deaths in 2012.

The 88 reports constituted of: 5 humans, 1 bird, 81 mosquitoes, and 1 from a domestic animal.

The wet summer has contributed to the severity of West Nile virus. Health authorities warn all the residents of nearby areas to be careful and pay attention to health. Those who do become ill can experience headaches and fever. The symptoms typically last only a few days. For one in 150 people the mosquito bite can develop into a life-altering illness.

Residents can eliminate habitat by getting rid of standing and stagnant water where mosquitoes lay eggs.

It can be spread by mosquitoes.
