30-year-old doorstop turns out to be a rare meteorite

Rock Used As Doorstop For Decades Turns Out To Be Meteorite Worth $100,000

A recent MI meteor event drove the man to the university to evaluate his rock's worth.

In 1988, an unnamed man bought a farm in Edmore, Michigan and was being toured around the property when he spotted a large, strange-looking rock holding the door of a shed open. As the new owner of the property, the man was told that the rock was a part of the property and that he could have it. However, she has never examined a rock that has turned out to be an official space rock, until now.

For 30 years, the 22-pound space rock was used as a doorstop.

Geology faculty member Mona Sirbescu who examined it under X-ray fluorescence said it was the most valuable specimen she ever held. UPI reports that the previous owner of the property told him that the meteorite had arrived on the farm during a meteor shower in the 1930s.

In fact, the almost 23-pound hunk of iron and nickel is the sixth largest meteorite found in Michigan, according to the Smithsonian Museum and Central Michigan University.

Unai Emery happy with Arsenal's 'confident' game at Fulham
Aubameyang's 16 goals in 23 games since joining the Gunners in January has eclipsed Henry's record upon arriving in north London in 1999.

Eventually, the man noticed that people were making money from finding and selling small pieces of meteorite, so he figured he should get his giant rock evaluated.

For years, the MI man used space rock as a doorstep.

She cut off a slice of the meteorite and sent it to the Smithsonian who confirmed that the 22.5-pound rock is indeed a meteorite that is made up of 88.5 percent iron and 11.5 percent nickel. Typically, meteorites tend to look rather different from Earth rocks because they lack quartz and do not typically contain holes or vesticles. The next morning the farmer and his father discovered the crater and dug out the meteorite, which was still quite warm. Sirbescu said. The Smithsonian has named the rock Edmore meteorite and is considering buying the meteorite so it will be displayed later.

As for the future of the find, Sirbescu said meteorites are often sold to collectors or museums.

The Smithsonian and a mineral museum in ME are considering purchasing the meteorite for display, according to CMU. If the sale, indeed, goes through the owner has agreed to donate 10% of its price to the CMU for the study of earth and atmospheric sciences.
