Majorca Floods: Two Brits Reported Dead After Heavy Rain Sweeps Island

MADRID-Torrential rainstorms caused flash flooding on the Spanish island of Mallorca, killing at least six people and leaving nine others missing on October 10, authorities said.

The Foreign Office said it was "urgently seeking updates" from their Spanish counterparts about the fate of any British people stranded in the area.

The Britons, who were married and in their seventies, were travelling by taxi about 40 miles east of the Spanish island's capital, Palma, when the auto was swept away.

"I hardly had any clothes on me as they all got caught on a metal fence when I was swimming", Manuel Torrescusa told the Diario de Mallorca.

The Foreign Office said in a statement: "We are in contact with the Spanish authorities responding to flooding in Majorca, and urgently seeking updates from them".

The only missing person as of Wednesday afternoon was a 5-year-old boy who disappeared with his mother.

"This looks like the end of the world". In all, more than 500 people helped with rescue and cleaning up operations, authorities said.

Tennis star Rafael Nadal, who hails from the worst hit area in Mallorca, has offered to open up his sports centre and tennis academy to people affected by the floods. The flooding also affected phone communications and forced the closure of at least seven major roads.

Spain's weather agency said up to 22 centimeters (8.7 inches) of rain fell within four hours, triggering flash floods in the island.
