6 children dead from adenovirus outbreak in New Jersey

Viral Outbreak at New Jersey Rehabilitation Center Leaves 6 Children Dead

The state Health Department on Tuesday confirmed the 18 cases of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, about 30 miles northwest of New York City.

Adenoviruses can cause mild to severe illness, though serious illness is less common.

Adenoviruses are responsible for about 10 percent of fever-related infections among United States children, and most children will have at least one type of infection by age 10.

Inspectors from the Department of Health have visited the center and are providing infection control and cleaning procedures. "The strain has been particularly associated with disease in communal living arrangements and can be more severe".

A viral outbreak has left six children dead and 12 other sick at a New Jersey rehabilitation facility, health officials say. Symptoms can range from a sore throat and fever to intestinal inflammation and neurological disease.

Regardless of what happens in this situation, the Broncos can not depend on Chad Kelly going forward. The man, later identified as Kelly, was taken into custody and transported to Arapahoe County Prison.

State officials were first notified of respiratory illnesses at the center on October 9, officials said.

The department is continuing to investigate the outbreak.

The FDA has approved a vaccine for adenovirus strains 4 and 7, but only for use in military personnel who are at higher risk.

Health officials said there is an "ongoing outbreak investigation" underway and that an inspection team from the agency has been investigating at the facility in Haskell.
