Almost 100 additional women sue USC over gynecologist’s alleged sexual misconduct

USC to pay $215m over gynaecologist sex abuse claims

The University of Southern California (USC) has agreed to pay $215m (£165m) to patients treated by a former campus doctor accused of sexual abuse.

In court documents and in interviews, former patients of Tyndall's have accused him of a variety of abusive practices, including invasive and unnecessary pelvic exams, touching their vaginas, asking them to undress in front of him and making sexually explicit remarks about women's bodies.

Since the revelation, hundreds of women with misconduct complaints against Tyndall have come forward and filed lawsuits against the school, claiming that USC tried to cover up his sexual abuse.

"I am part of an accidental sisterhood of hundreds of women because the university we love betrayed our trust", said Dana Loewy, who alleges that Tyndall assaulted her in 1983. A total of some 500 women have lodged complaints against Tyndall dating back to 1988, according to the AP.

"By doing so, we hope that we can help our community move collectively toward reconciliation", USC interim president Dr Wanda Austin said in a letter on Friday. The USC Student Health organization promised to provide more medical resources in Chinese for worldwide students from China.

Tyndall has denied the allegations, and a statement from his lawyer claimed that his examinations "were for the stated medical objective", according to CNN.

The announcement comes after 93 former students filed two class-action lawsuits Thursday against the school for failing to address complaints about the doctor.

Other former patients can seek additional money up to $250,000 by detailing their experience with Tyndall.

3 consecutive earthquakes strike off Vancouver Island, with no reports of damage
They were followed by a magnitude 6.5 quake and they were all in the same Sovanco transform fault. There were no initial reports of damage or injuries, and no tsunami warnings were issued.

"USC got out cheap - a jury would have absolutely crushed them", said Michael Barasch, a lawyer who has handled more than 300 sex-abuse cases.

Austin said in a statement that since she became interim university president, "a fair and respectful resolution for as many former patients as possible has been a priority for the university and for me personally".

The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County district attorney's office are reviewing allegations against Tyndall.

"I went to Dr. Tyndall for my first gynecological visit, and I was unaware of the standard procedure for gynecological exams so not understanding at the time how wrong, inappropriate and illegal his actions were, I made no official report", she said. "We, along with President Austin, will continue to work to make it even stronger for our students, patients, faculty, staff, and alumni".

As of October 19, 2018, the university has reached agreement in principle on a $215 million class action settlement that will compensate students who received women's health services from Dr. George Tyndall at USC's student health center. We care deeply about our community, we are listening carefully, learning from these experiences and strengthening our university.

Frederick J. Ryan Jr., publisher and chief executive of The Washington Post, is a member of the USC board.

Our Board of Trustees supports this settlement, which was reached in collaboration with plaintiffs' counsel, and which will provide relief to those who have been impacted by this hard experience. USC denied allegations that it covered up complaints, according to the BBC.
