Australian by-election count goes to the wire, after PM concedes

Australian Government Loses Majority With Election Defeat

While postal votes are still being counted, Dr Phelps leads Mr Sharma by more than 1,600 votes.

Sharma did well among voters who voted early, suggesting at least some support was pushed to Phelps by the Morrison government's performance over the past fortnight - in which Coalition senators voted in favour of Pauline Hanson's "it's OK to be white" motion, and the government had to scramble to clarify its position on discrimination against gay schoolchildren.

"That is the definition of instability", he said.

"I've certainly said that the government and all governments should go full term unless there are exceptional circumstances, and the next election is due in May next year, and that's time enough", Dr Phelps told ABC TV.

If Dr Phelps is confirmed the victor, there will be a crossbench of six members in the House of Representatives with Labor holding 69 seats and the coalition one short of a majority with 75.

But by Sunday evening, his candidate trailed an independent rival by 1,600 votes with several thousand votes still to be counted, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) said.

Independent Kerryn Phelps was more than 1600 votes ahead on Sunday night and still on track to win Wentworth, after a dramatic narrowing of the margin earlier brought Liberal candidate Dave Sharma back into the race. The Liberal Party has held the seat since 1944, except for a brief period in 2004. "The result is on us, the Liberals not on Dave Sharma".

In a series of posts and videos, he said the Morrison government had been captured by right-wing "extremists" - he also created a "top 5 craziest Liberals" list.

The narrative was boosted by Turnbull's son Alex, who shared videos and tweets in the build up to the election calling for voters to turn from the Liberals.

Brewers one win from World Series
As a reward and result of their 5-1 victory over the Brewers - they will represent the National league in the 2018 World Series. The Brewers' bag of bullpen tricks had run out, and the Dodgers are returning to the World Series for the second straight year.

Kerryn Phelps caused the biggest by-election defeat Australia has ever seen. As well, there needed to be an action plan for tackling climate change, she said - although the government on Sunday signalled there would be no change in its climate policy.

"I " ll support good legislation.

"We have paid a great price for the events of a few months ago", Mr Morrison said, referring to the former Wentworth member Malcolm Turnbull being deposed as prime minister after a bloody internal coup.

His successor as prime minister was in a bullish mood following the closing of the gap between Dr Phelps and Mr Sharma, but analysts are confident that the former will hold on.

The Australian Government has steadfastly refused to allow any refugees arriving by boat to enter the country.

Sharkie said she was not sure, from Morrison's Saturday night speech, that he had got the message from Wentworth, but hoped he had thought it through overnight.

Shorten said last week Labor would oppose the government's bill, because the consequences of it are too far reaching.

Her victory has prompted at least one other high-profile woman to consider running as an independent in the next general election. "I don't buy that argument".
