Banksy reveals 'Girl With Balloon' shredding stunt malfunctioned in mysterious video

Banksy Girl WIth Balloon

Nearly two weeks after Banksy shared a short video via Instagram confirming that he was behind the shredding of his famous Girl With Balloon artwork while at auction, the artist has released a director's cut video documenting the stunt.

The clip, titled "Shred The Love", purportedly shows Banksy, originally from Bristol in southwest England, testing out the secret shredding mechanism that he'd inserted into the frame prior to the sale. But in a jaw-dropping twist, the iconic piece was immediately destroyed by a shredding device located inside the frame.

The buyer has said they plan to keep the painting anyway and some have suggested the partially shredded version is actually worth more now than if it was intact because what really is art, anyway, if not a game of one-up trolling all for the purposes of profit?

But the famously anonymous artist posted a video Wednesday on his website implying the work should have been completely destroyed.

The footage shows how a button was pressed to trigger an alarm from the painting, as part of it was sliced into strips.

Trump welcomes back Pastor Andrew Brunson from Turkey in DC
A Turkish court on Friday convicted Brunson of having links to terrorism and sentenced him to just over three years in prison. President Trump welcomed the Brunsons to the White House over the weekend, just after the couple's return stateside.

"In rehearsals it worked every time", a note reads - before showing a painting being entirely shredded by the hidden device. Partial shredding of the masterpiece is shown, as auctioneers rushed to take the work off the wall and out of the room.

Banksy previously claimed that preparations for the stunt were carried out "a few years ago" in case it was ever put up for auction.

Sotheby's said the artwork has been given a new title, Love is in the Bin, and that it has been granted a certificate by Banksy's authentication body.

The woman who bought the piece at the auction went ahead with the purchase.

Alex Branczik, Sotheby's head of contemporary art in Europe, has also reiterated in a new interview that the auction house was not in on the stunt.
