Cuadrilla to resume fracking seven years after tremors

Cuadrilla's fracking drill rig at Preston New Road

The company that will go ahead with the fracking, Cuadrilla Resources, confirmed on Friday that it planned to go ahead with hydraulic fracturing operations at its Preston New Road shale gas exploration site in Lancashire on Saturday, October 13.

The practice, which involves injecting liquid underground to fracture rock and release gas, was halted in the United Kingdom after it was linked to earthquakes in 2011.

Fracking will restart in the United Kingdom today after a High Court challenge was dismissed.

Ginette Evans, 60, from Fleetwood, said: "We'll be monitoring the site 24 hours a day".

A spokesman for the company said: "Cuadrilla is pleased to confirm that it has started hydraulic fracturing operations at our Preston New Road shale gas exploration site". It is definitely not over, it has just got serious.

One activist sat on top of a van outside the site with a banner which read "Stop the Start" while another lay down in front of railings.

Google AI Detects Breast Cancer Better Than Humans

"I feel, as somebody in my 50s now, that my generation has so badly let down future generations", she added. "It's such a risky industry and it shouldn't be here".

The launch of the project follows a failed legal challenge by an environmental campaigner Friday.

Justin Vanparys, 47, from Blackburn, said: "Fossil fuels should stay in the ground".

"Shale gas has the potential to be a new domestic energy source, enhancing our energy security and delivering economic benefits, including the creation of well-paid, quality jobs", the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said.

The government asked its climate advisers on Monday to examine whether Britain should toughen its climate targets and set a date to move to a net zero emissions goal.

Locals and environmentalists argue that fracking damages tourism, contaminates water supplies, hurts wildlife, causes earthquakes and contributes to global climate change.
