The NHC said in its 8 a.m. update that Hurricane Willa is an "extremely dangerous" storm with 155 miles per hour winds-enough to make it a strong Category 4 system. "Willa is forecast to accelerate toward the north-northeast and move over or very near the Islas Marias early Tuesday and make landfall along the southwestern coast of mainland Mexico in the hurricane warning area late Tuesday or Tuesday night", according to the NHC. Packing winds of up to 155mph, Willa is just 2mph away from becoming a Category 5 hurricane.
The NHC said "a risky storm surge" was also likely to affect coastal areas by Tuesday evening, adding that rain and strong winds would be accompanied by "large destructive waves".
Two tropical storms are swirling in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico, and one is forecast to become a hurricane and approach the country's west coast late next week.
Willa is expected to make landfall on Mexico's south-western coast on Tuesday and is "potentially catastrophic", the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) warned.
Willa is then expected to weaken after passing over the Sierra Madre mountains, and the remnants of the storm will likely will bring significant rainfall to Texas. A tropical storm warning is in effect for another 190 miles of coast, from San Blan to Playa Perula.
A map made by the National Hurricane Center shows the projected path for Hurricane Willa as of 8 a.m. ET on October 22, 2018. Hurricane force winds extended out 25 miles from the storm's core and tropical storm force winds were up to 80 miles out.
To add to the woes, the Tropical Storm Vicente will also threaten Mexico with heavy downpours in the coming days. It would also cause torrential downpours of about 70 to 150 mm of rain in parts of Southern Mexico with over 250 mm over pockets of Guerrero, Michoaca, Colima and Jalisco causing flash flooding and landslides. The additional rainfall could cause additional flooding in already saturated areas.
There are now no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the quakes and no tsunami warning has been issued. A strong magnitude 6.6 natural disaster has struck just off the west coast of Vancouver Island late Sunday evening.
