Facebook has hired former UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to head its global policy and communications teams, enlisting a veteran of European Union politics to help it with increased regulatory scrutiny in the region.

The FT reported he would be given a leading role in shaping the firm's strategy.

Sir Nick Clegg will move to California in January.

Trump To Send Troops, Close Border if Mexico Won't Stop Migrant March
NBC News reports the Mexican government sent 500 officers to the country's border with Guatemala ahead of their approach. Honduran migrants leave Guatemala City at sunrise Thursday, October 18, as they continue their way north toward the US.

Cambridge university grad Clegg will join Facebook at a time when it is under increasing pressure from regulators and governments around the world over everything from taxes to data protection. "The decision by Facebook to hire Mr Clegg, a former European Commission trade negotiator and member of the European Parliament, suggests the company is trying to boost its connections in Brussels, where Facebook could face some of its biggest regulatory challenges".

The 51-year-old politician was leader of the Liberal Democrats and formed a coalition government with David Cameron and the Conservatives in 2010. "Having spoken at length to Mark and Sheryl over the last few months, I have been struck by their recognition that the company is on a journey which brings new responsibilities not only to the users of Facebook's apps but to society at large", Clegg said.

And Clegg has already had some practice in speaking up for the poor put-upon billionaire he's going to be working for, having written an op-ed in the Independent previous year titled "In defence of Facebook and the Silicon Valley tech giants".
