Five Washington children hospitalized with sudden paralysis
The illness causes a weakening of the nerves and resembles polio.
This disease affects the nervous system, specifically the area of a person's spinal cord called gray matter, according to the CDC.
Most of the eight cases of the illness reported in Texas are in the northern part of the state. As limbs become weak, a patient might lose the ability to use their arms or legs.
Since Orville Young, a 4 year old in Minnesota, fell ill with a fever in July, CBS News reported, he has experienced difficulties moving his right arm - sometimes experiencing full paralysis - and was diagnosed with AFM.
"It seems that there are specific strains of enterovirus that may be more likely to cause acute flaccid myelitis in a small percentage of children that have it", says Dr. Eric Robinette, pediatric infectious disease physician at Akron Children's Hospital.
Akron Children's is waiting on lab results of two cases that seem to fit the "clinical picture" of AFM.

The CDC says there have been a total of 362 cases nationally between August 2014 and August 2018, with 38 confirmed cases so far this year.
AFM is not a reportable disease, meaning there may be more cases that were just treated and the child recovered and AFM wasn't diagnosed.
"The cause of any individual case of AFM can be hard to determine, and often, no cause is found", the Washington State Department of Health said in a release on Wednesday. This year, there was one case of AFM before the current batch of five affected children.
"You can protect yourself and your children from poliovirus by getting vaccinated", the CDC advises.
The agency is also warning parents to be vigilant about protecting kids from mosquito bites because of the possible connection between West Nile virus and AFM. However, 11 of the Colorado cases of AFM have tested positive for EV A71, a rare type of enterovirus not usually seen in the U.S., rather in Asia and other parts of the world, according to Herlihy. He said, "If one arm isn't working correctly, or one leg, or one side of the body, or if you notice an asymmetry in the face where one side looks very different than the other side, that child should be evaluated". Most said parents can do is encouraging kids to wash their hands, teaching them to cover their mouths with their elbow when they cough or sneeze, and keep them home if they are sick.
Symptoms include limb weakness, facial drooping and trouble swallowing.
