Google appeals EU's $5 billion fine over Android antitrust practices

Google challenges $5 bn EU antitrust fine in Android case

This means Google will have to meet a deadline at the end of October to end the behaviour the European Union says is anticompetitive or face additional fines of up to 5% of average daily global revenue for each day it doesn't comply.

Google has appealed against the European Commission's almost $5 billion fine that was imposed on the tech giant in July for illegally using Android mobile devices to strengthen dominance of Google's Search engine.

"We have now filed our appeal of the EC's Android decision at the General Court of the EU", Google said in a statement.

"Our case is about three types of restrictions that Google has imposed on Android device manufacturers and network operators to ensure that traffic on Android devices goes to the Google search engine", said Commissioner Margrethe Vestager who is in charge of competition policy. Although market dominance is not an illegal practice under European Union antitrust laws, regulators said dominant companies like Google have a "special responsibility" to ensure that competition is not restricted.

In its July decision, Brussels accused Google of using the Android system's huge popularity on smartphones and tablets to promote the use of its own Google search engine and shut out rivals.

Hurricane Michael gathers deadly force as Florida braces for monster storm
A slight risk of severe weather has been outlined for central Georgia for today and tonight for the threat of spin-up tornadoes. The hurricane is expected to be the most powerful storm to strike the southern USA state's panhandle in at least a decade.

They were also made to set Google Search as the default, as a condition of licensing some Google apps. Under the agreements, certain Google apps, search tools and the Google Play Store must be preinstalled on Android devices, allowing Google to strengthen its dominance in search.

In a statement to Reuters, Google said it had "filed our appeal of the EC's Android decision at the General Court of the European Union".

The decision, according to the Google CEO, ignored the fact that Android phones compete with iOS phones.
