Hundreds of thousands march in London to demand new Brexit vote

Anti-Brexit protesters hold placards as they take part in an anti-Brexit pro-EU march through the centre of Liverpool

Tens of thousands of supporters of the European Union began marching through London on Saturday as part of what organisers say will be the largest ever demonstration to demand that the British government holds a public vote on the terms of Brexit. Corbyn was in Geneva meeting the former president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, who was imprisoned by the Pinochet regime.

But with negotiations between London and Brussels deadlocked, it remains unclear what deal, if any, her government can deliver.

People will be flocking from all over the United Kingdom to the capital, including more than 100 people from Salisbury, to join the protest march against Brexit.

The march comes after another tumultuous week for Prime Minister Theresa May in which she failed to agree a divorce deal with European Union leaders in Brussels and infuriated members of her own party by making further concessions in the talks. "It is a scandal and it should not be accepted".

"The important thing to remember about a people's vote is that it doesn't take the option of leaving off the table, but it's actually created to give people a considered response, now that they have more information to hand".

"Only a second referendum will put the issue to rest".

"We would have to meet minimum income rules and I am self-employed", the 53-year-old said.

"Rather than pursue diversionary tactics, Nicola Sturgeon should get on with working with the United Kingdom government to get the best deal possible".

Cherry appeared on the main platform with Green leader Caroline Lucas, London Mayor Sadiq Khan of Labour, Lib Dem leader Vince Cable and the Remain supporting Tory MP, Anna Soubry.

The rally has been backed by a raft of celebrities including Delia Smith and Deborah Meaden from Dragon's Den.

Cable said it was a "tragedy this country is being divided by generation".

Co-chair of the Leave Means Leave campaign Richard Tice said: "It is not a people's vote, it is actually a losers' vote".

London Mayor Mr Khan told the crowd: "What's really important is that those that say that a public vote is undemocratic, is unpatriotic, realise that in fact, the exact opposite is the truth".

"I think people were misled in various ways", small business owner Peter Hancock told AFP while tightening an European Union flag around the neck of his huge bearded collie.

Longman, who was marching alongside Emma Stevens, also 20, said: "We're both Spanish students due to study overseas next year, but no one knows what will happen with Erasmus funding".

"We've realised there isn't a good deal coming out of this and a lot of people are frightened, people are anxious".

Pro-EU campaigners argue that the British public has been misled with false promises, and that a hard Brexit will leave everyone worse off.

"Where are all the Brexit leaders", Soubry asked. They have walked away.

"The only way we can avoid this total madness and win back our future has to be a People's Vote".

Borrowing language from the Leave campaign, she added: "We will continue to make the case in parliament".

"Brexit's becoming a dog's dinner. Brexit is not inevitable".
