Kenya Bus Crash Kills 51

This bus crashed near Kericho in western Kenya on Wednesday leaving 50 dead

Fifty people have been killed in a bus crash in western Kenya, officials say.

According to police, the bus was travelling from Nairobi to the western town of Kakamega and carrying 52 passengers.

Eight children are among the dead following the accident in the western town of Kericho, according to The Daily Nation newspaper.

The bus left the road, rolled down a slope and crashed. The accident happened around 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

"It is unfortunate that we have lost 51 people", Kenya's police chief Joseph Boinnet told Capital FM radio.

President Uhuru Kenyatta posted a message on his Twitter page offering "heartfelt condolences to the families of fellow Kenyans who lost their lives in a tragic road accident at Fort Ternan in Kericho County this morning".

Highway roads in Kenya can be notoriously risky and the World Health Organization (WHO) has ranked Kenya as one of the world's worst countries for road safety.

The African country re-introduced breathalysers in 2013 but had to remove them again after court orders barred police from charging drivers using readings from the devices as evidence.

In an article for the Elephant online publication in November, commentator Patrick Gathara criticised the government's "knee-jerk responses such as the banning of night buses, enforcement of speed limits, seat belts and speed governors on public transport vehicles".
