Netflix Posts Big Rebound in Subscriber Growth

Markets Insider

"I'm afraid the (second quarter-to-third quarter) story is probably mostly an issue of forecasting as opposed to anything changing in the business", Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said during comments broadcast in an online video. Some analysts were even quite negative on Netflix as the company's pre-earnings valuations were 127 times 2018 earnings per share and 80 times those for 2019. "The latter has not developed at a pace that exceeds our expectations, which suggests upside is more limited".

Netflix shares typically fluctuate widely after earnings, and this quarter was no exception. Also, CFO David B. Wells sold 1,000 shares of the firm's stock in a transaction that occurred on Monday, August 20th.

Netflix, which reported robust subscriber growth in the third quarter, did not provide separate subscriber numbers for India.

Netflix's fourth-quarter original-content roster includes the final season of "House of Cards" and the debut of "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", based on the Archie Comics character Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Earnings obliterated Wall Street predictions as well, coming in at 89 cents a share-21 cents above the estimate.

"Given the decreasing efficiency of content and marketing spending, we are decreasing our global contribution profit estimates", he wrote.

Netflix distributes dramas, movies and other video content over the Internet at a fixed subscription price. Despite growing competition, it seems that Netflix's constant investment and production of exclusive programming is helping drive the company forward!

Jamal Khashoggi: Pressure grows on Saudis as United States envoy meets king
Those policies are all seen as initiatives of Prince Mohammed, the son of King Salman, who is next in line to the throne. On Monday, however, Trump offered a different theory after speaking by telephone with King Salman.

For the quarter, Netflix added 6.96 million new subscribers globally, beating the five million that the company forecast for the period back in July and the 5.18 million analysts surveyed by FactSet predicted. In the third quarter previous year, Netflix posted $2.99 billion in sales.

Netflix never identifies which shows are most successful.

Currently, Netflix is the most expensive streaming service in India, starting at Rs. 500 per month for a single screen and Rs. 650 per month for HD quality.

Netflix officials predict the company will add another 9.4 million viewers by the end of this year. Monness Crespi & Hardt dropped their price objective on Netflix from $460.00 to $430.00 and set a "buy" rating for the company in a research note on Tuesday, July 17th.

On the financial front, Netflix earned $403 million on revenue of $4 billion in the quarter. Stock prices immediately rose 11% on the day, while after hours trading steadied the stock back a small amount from the initial jump. Disney and AT&T Inc, the parent of Warner Bros. and HBO, are each looking to introduce new services next year - after completing takeovers of other companies worth a combined $160 billion.
