Not Exercising Is Worse for Your Health Than Smoking, Says Study

Sedentary Lifestyle Worse For Health And Mortality Than Smoking, Heart Disease, And Diabetes: Study

Sure, exercise contributes to better health, but not all workouts are the same, and different bodies benefit from different types of exercise.

But while there is not necessarily an agreement about what exercise-and how much-you should do to maximize your health, there is one thing that is certain.

Being sedentary is worse for your health than smoking, a new study claims.

Researchers suggest that risks must be conveyed to the general public of being unfit should be considered a strong of a risk factor as is smoking, diabetes, and hypertension if not stronger than all of them; and should be treated as a disease that can actually be cured with the prescription of exercise. Or perhaps, he adds, it may be an even stronger factor!

The findings stem from a study of more than 120,000 people from 1991 to 2014.

With the results of the new study, the researchers note the importance of fitness when it comes to long-term mortality, and even encourage patients to also ask for an exercise prescription from their doctors. The lowest exercise group accounted for only 12 percent of the total participants.

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic in the United States have found that better cardiorespiratory fitness leads to better longevity, regardless of age, with no limit on the positive effects of aerobic fitness.

Previously researchers have been concerned with the idea of over exercising or "ultra" exercises and that those who excessively exercise might be at a higher risk of death, but this study found that not to be the case. Simply put, the results show that having higher fitness levels could play an important role in living longer lives. As benefits were seen across all ages and sexes in this study. While there is a slight intimation that females may experience slightly higher benefits, the conclusion is simple: anyone and everyone will benefit from implementing consistent [aerobic] exercise to their lifestyle.

The risks, he said, became more shocking when comparing those who don't exercise much. "This is us testing them and figuring out objectively the real measure of what they do". Then, using social security and medical records, they tracked if and when the patients died. Diabetes and heart disease, obviously not great, either. No age limit has been found that will not benefit from being physically active.

Dr. Satjit Bhusri, a cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital, who was not involved in the study, said this reinforces what we know.

It's nearly as if humans were meant to walk and run. "It's all about getting up and moving".
