Oculus Rift 2 cancellation reportedly prompts co-founder to quit Facebook

Oculus Rift 2 has reportedly been killed

So much has happened since the day we founded Oculus in July 2012.

In April, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum left Facebook four years after selling the messaging app, and last month Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom and fellow co-founder Mike Krieger bolted. "We assembled one of the greatest research and engineering teams in history, delivered the first step of true virtual presence with Oculus Rift and Touch, and inspired an entirely new industry", he wrote.

Facebook is losing another long-tenured founder from an acquired company: Brendan Iribe, who was the chief executive officer of Oculus VR when Facebook bought it in 2014. We started a revolution that will change the world in ways we can't even envision.

Williams Not Settled On Kubica
Claire Williams has confirmed that Robert Kubica is a contender to complete the British team's 2019 driver lineup. This is also why Ocon remains an attractive proposition despite not bringing any backing.

Facebook issued a statement Monday hailing Iribe for pushing virtual reality "far beyond the boundaries of what people thought possible and it's because of his vision that we're all here working on VR today". Although we're still far from delivering the magical smart glasses we all dream about, now they are almost within our reach.

Iribe announced his departure on Facebook yesterday, saying he was "moving on" and looking forward to his "first real break in 20 years", but the TechCrunch report suggests the decision was closely tied with the apparent cancellation of the aforementioned Rift 2. He'll use the time to "recharge, reflect and be creative", adding that he's excited about the next chapter. Over email, an Oculus spokesperson didn't directly address the existence of a "Rift 2" headset and whether its development had been canceled last week, but did say "we are planning a future version of Rift" and pointed to Mark Zuckerberg's recent Oculus 5 keynote.

Sources who spoke to TechCrunch claim that Iribe and the Facebook team had "fundamentally different views on the future of Oculus that grew deeper over time", with Iribe apparently not wanting to participate in a VR "race to the bottom".
