Pakistan’s Supreme Court reinstates ban on airing Indian films shows on local TV channels

Only appropriate content should be aired, the CJP remarked.

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Saturday reinstated a ban on the transmission of Indian content on local television channels, setting aside an earlier ruling by the Lahore High Court (LHC).

"They are trying to (obstruct the construction) of our dam and we can not even ban their channels?"

The treaty specifies that the waters of three eastern rivers namely Ravi, Beas and Sutlej, had been reserved for India while that of western rivers, namely Indus, Chenab and Jhelum, are for Pakistan.

Chief Justice Saqib Nisar said the ban was justified as India was damming rivers that flow into Pakistan.

Indian movies are popular in Pakistan and throughout the region, and Bollywood employs many Pakistani musicians and actors.

According to the decision, the news and entertainment TV channels, FM radio stations and the channels operated by the cable operators were allowed to air a maximum of 10 per cent foreign content in 24 hours, with the limit for Indian content of an hour and 40 minutes, excluding advertisements and breaks.

The ban was eventually lifted in 2008, but has been sporadically reintroduced.

LHC's then Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah issued a written order on a petition by M/s Leo Communication and others challenging the ban on the broadcast of Indian content on the televisions.

Bitter nuclear rivals India and Pakistan have had a long history of wars and disputes since independence they won independence from British colonial rule in 1947, mainly over Kashmir.

Pakistan says the dams are being used against it as a weapon, a claim India denies.
