Patriots' red-zone defense key in thrilling win over Chiefs

Watch: Patriots fans throw beer at, flip off Tyreek Hill after clutch TD

Stephen Gostkowski hit a 28-yard field goal as time expired, and the New England Patriots beat the Kansas City Chiefs 43-40 on Sunday night after blowing a big halftime lead.

Kansas City's young gunslinger Patrick Mahomes visited Gillette Stadium with a tough task facing Tom Brady.

With security blanket Julian Edelman back from suspension, Tom Brady looks like himself again.

After the 24-year old completed the 75-yard score he ran toward the stands.

The Patriots will play at Chicago next Sunday afternoon.

Rob Gronkowski had been having a quiet night.

It was the Chiefs' first loss of the season after a five straight wins, while the Patriots improved to 5-2 in winning a game that could prove critical when it comes to playoff seeding.

This was a wild one.

Everybody knows Mahomes can throw - in the pregame broadcast he admitted he could launch a ball up to 82 yards, and said he could probably shoot for 85 - and Brady is the winningest quarterback of all time. That's all Sony Michel needed. Brady broke a tackle by Chiefs rookie Breeland Speaks, who told reporters after the game that he thought Brady already had released a pass. But he turned the ball over twice in the first half and the high-scoring Chiefs were held to three field goals. That play led to a 30-yard field goal by Harrison Butker. Mahomes leads the National Football League with 14 passing touchdowns, tight end Travis Kelce has recorded three 100-yard games, Kareem Hunt has already scored five touchdowns, and Tyreek Hill (three TDs) is a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball.

The defense continued their end of the bargain, but it wasn't easy. Following a 17-yard Travis Kelce reception, the Chiefs had a first-and-goal from the 7-yard line.

The balanced play continued before the half.

Although he only added two receptions to that one catch first-half tally, both were vital to the New England victory. You know, we had control and then we let them back in the game with some - you know, the fumble was a bad play. Chiefs entered the final frame down one, 27-26.

The Chiefs didn't waste any time in the second half, scoring on their first drive to close the gap to 24-16. At 13:39 of the third quarter, on a third-and-2, Mahomes hit Kareem Hunt for a 67-yard touchdown.

A powerful stiff arm from Gronkowski helped set up a field goal with just over three minutes left, and another big run from the big man put the Patriots in position for the game-winning field goal. The Chiefs added a field goal of their own, but then the Pats got sloppy.
