Ripley: Facebook is developing camera-equipped hardware for TVs

Facebook backtracks, says data from Portal devices may inform ad targeting

If that reasoning is correct, it could be at least a few months before Facebook launches its TV add-on. Aside from making video calls, the Portals can display photos and play music and videos.

Although the Portal support website says that it will only send voice commands to Facebook, the company spokesperson made it clear that this is not the case.

Facebook has been insistent that Portal is "private by design", and the company said no data - such as call logs and app usage information - would be used to target users with ads.

With projects like Portal and Ripley Facebook is trying to build a consumer-hardware business outside of its virtual reality brand Oculus that was acquired by the social networking giant in March 2014 for almost $2 billion.

It's no secret that Facebook has its hands in as much user data as possible for advertisement purposes.

PH takes 56th spot in global competitiveness index
Hopefully, we will see more business-government-academe linkages to support the growth of priority sectors. The country was ranked lowest in product market at 102nd, business dynamism at 101st and skills at 97th.

Mysterious references in Facebook's code and a new report suggest the project is codenamed "Ripley".

Following Cambridge Analytica and several site hacks, people have been understandably concerned about placing a Facebook product containing a camera and microphone in their home.

So, some users may find it concerning that Facebook's new Portal and Portal+ smart camera devices can in fact be used to facilitate targeted ads.

When Facebook unveiled its upcoming Portal lineup, its home video calling devices, it created the perception that the piece of hardware would have nothing to do with ad targeting, thereby steering clear of the privacy and data handling headaches that have plagued Facebook all year.

Announcing these features could help boost confidence in the Portal but eventually, time will tell if these measures combined with flashy features will be enough to attract customers. They also can show advertising with screensaver-like notifications when they're not being used, per Digital Trends. But Facebook's having to confirm that the Portal gadgets have the potential to turn more of your data into ads isn't something Portal skeptics will like hearing, not after the year Facebook had so far.
