The Red Poppy is traditionally sold by the Royal British Legion, which claims it is not political but instead it is a symbol of remembrance and hope.

The Royal British Legion is clear that the red poppy is not a sign of support for war and death.

The first-ever digital Remembrance Day Poppy is being supported by a number of Canadian personalities, including Margaret Atwood, Don Cherry, Ron MacLean, Sandra Oh, Justin Bieber and the Nation Hockey League Players' Association. Digital Poppy owners will also have the option of using the virtual Poppy as their profile images as well as adding their own personal touch.

This year's annual poppy appeal launches today to remember all those British soldiers who have died in wartime.

All the funds generated by the campaign go to support veterans in our communities.

"It's a free-for-all. People can take that emoji and utilize it for other purposes, which happens all the time in different environments or different companies", he explains.

Danny Martin says it's also meant to address our "increasingly cashless society", and make poppies available in parts of Canada where they may be hard to find.

The bright red poppies are meant to be worn from the last Friday of October until midnight, November 11.

Officials say that the shift from traditional poppies to digital is, in part, due to trying to grow and maintain a mostly volunteer-based sales team and dealing with the realities of an increasingly cashless supporter base.

Donations are made through the campaign by purchasing a poppy at any local store where they are located, or through mail orders.

Publicity material for the digital poppy featured endorsements by celebrity Canadians including Margaret Atwood, Ashley Callingbull and Don Cherry, who dedicated his poppy to his great uncle, Sgt. Thomas William MacKenzie.
