Samsung makes a major 5G push

Samsung will be exploring joint capabilities to create new technology in the transformation from 4G to 5G.

Founded in 2008, Zhilabs' customers include Telefónica, Telenor, Vodafone and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, according to its website. Joan Raventos, CEO of Zhilabs.

Samsung disclosed that it's acquired Barcelona-based Zhilabs, a network analytics startup, and while Samsung hasn't shared terms of the deal, it is saying the objective is pretty straightforward.

The acquisition will allow the company to further enhance its 5G capabilities whereas AI-based automation will play a central role in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and connected auto applications, which will require advanced automated solutions and network analytics.

To that end, a whopping KRW 25 trillion ($22 billion) investment in the areas of artificial intelligence, 5G, automotive electronics components, and biopharmaceuticals was announced a couple of months back, along with "additional" investments in semiconductors and displays to "maintain global leadership".

Samsung Electronics has announced its acquisition of Zhilabs, a company that offers AI-based network and service analytics.

Established in 2008, Zhilabs now provides a solution that analyzes networks' conditions, performances and data traffic for different services. While it will be fully owned by Samsung, Zhilabs will continue to operate independently under its own management.

Samsung said on Wednesday that it will explore and invest in other business opportunities powered by the emerging technologies. Samsung, of course, has already teamed up with large carriers to start powering commercial 5G networks. ZTE lost its fourth position in the global telecom network market in the wake of the US-imposed sanctions recently.

Samsung is well and truly signalling its 5G intent.
