Senior Australian doctor to be deported from Nauru

Chief medical officer Nicole Montana kicked off Nauru

Labor on Tuesday said it would introduce legislation aimed at ensuring sick refugee children at the regional processing centre in Nauru were brought to Australia for medical purposes if necessary.

According to sources at the meeting, Scott Morrison suggested resettlement could be an option, but only if the government was able to guarantee that asylum seekers were not able to make their way to Australia subsequently.

The deportation of the Australian doctor also follows Medecins Sans Frontieres calling for urgent evacuations from the island, and sharing emotional and detailed analysis the mental health conditions of the asylum seekers and refugees on the island.

Her replacement is already in Nauru.

The spokesperson said there had been no impact on medical services provided to refugees and asylum seekers.

The government is failing in its obligations to provide adequate medical care for children, the Opposition's Immigration and Border Protection spokesman Shayne Neumann said.

The ABC said it understood the Australian Government planned to call for a vote this week on the legislation.

Three Liberal MPs have also taken the extraordinary step of demanding the prime minister get children off the Pacific island, citing serious fears about their health.

After the decision, the MSF publicly blasted conditions on the island, highlighting that children as young as nine had told their staff they would rather die than live in a state of hopelessness in detention.

The global group Medicins Sans Frontieres was told earlier this month by officials in Nauru that mental health services must cease and their presence was no longer welcomed.

Local and worldwide condemnation is growing, but it could be a push by his own colleagues that forces Prime Minister Scott Morrison to act.

"Over the past 11 months on Nauru, I have seen an alarming number of suicide attempts and incidents of self-harm among the refugee and asylum seeker men, women and children we treat".

Morrison told reporters that there was now no majority support for the bill.

She insisted the government hadn't only become open to the plan after political pressure from its own ranks or ahead of the Wentworth by-election.

Mr Morrison talked up a bill, which has been sitting on the Senate notice paper since November 2016 but not prioritised by the government, that would allow asylum seekers to go to New Zealand but be prevented from ever going to Australia.

"Closing the loopholes would remove one of those hurdles". Fairfax Media says the government may put the bill to the vote this week.

The ban would prevent refugees who came by boat and settled in New Zealand from ending up in Australia.

The shadow cabinet resolved on Monday night to draft a private member's bill overhauling current processes to make the health of children the primary consideration when determining a temporary medical transfer from offshore detention.
