Soyuz Space Crew Makes Emergency Landing After Terrifying Booster Failure

ISS: Space rocket declares emergency after launch – astronauts parachute out | Daily Star

"A thorough investigation into the cause of the incident will be conducted", said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, who was in Kazakhstan for the rocket launch.

"I fully anticipate that we will fly again on a Soyuz rocket and I have no reason to believe at this point that it will not be on schedule", he told reporters in Moscow.

USA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin were rescued without injuries in Kazakhstan.

Roscosmos' executive director Sergei Krikalyov said in comments on state television that the rocket's failure happened after parts of the first and second stage came into collision.

Also, the December launch of the next crew members, which included Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques, could be on indefinite hold, as could any other crewed launches that have been scheduled. The trio is now scheduled to return home in December, and they're well supplied with food and water, said Kenny Todd, NASA's ISS operations integration manager, at a press briefing held yesterday.

"That is a landing mode we've seen before", the commentator said.

Hague was born in the same year the United States and the Soviet Union launched their first joint space mission, the Apollo-Soyuz, or Soyuz-Apollo mission in 1975.

Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin promised that Hague and Ovchinin will be given a chance soon to perform a stint on the orbiting outpost.

NASA later tweeted images of the two men embracing their families back in Baikonur. Most recently, a mysterious hole was detected on the Russian section of the ISS in August, and a Soyuz launch failure destroyed 18 satellites in November 2017.

The Russian capsule experienced a booster problem which meant the two-man crew's six-month mission to the International Space Station has had to be delayed.

To say that this situation is upsetting is an understatement.

But they got into trouble and were forced to make an emergency exit.

Thursday's aborted mission is another setback for Russia's space program. With this accident, and the potentially lengthy investigation that will follow, they could remain on the station for significantly longer. Russian Federation says there is enough food on board to last until April.

Russia is now under pressure to prove its space program is safe and received a boost on Friday when NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said he had full confidence in Russian-made Soyuz rockets and expected USA astronauts to fly on them again.

The launch of the Progress cargo ship, due to take place on October 31, may be delayed for some time, too, the officials said.

"Not every mission that fails, ends up so successful", he said.

Since NASA retired its space shuttle in 2011, the Russian Soyuz has been the only space vehicle capable of sending astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

The contract with Russian Federation ends in late 2019, and the US space agency has deals with the two American companies to step in at that point.

Sending astronauts to the ISS will be a first for a privately owned company. A Falcon 9 exploded later in 2016 before it had even launched. "The space station was designed for manned spaceflights, after all", he stressed.

All manned launches have been suspended and a criminal probe has been launched.

Former military pilots Ovchinin and Hague were set to join Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency, NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos following a six-hour flight.
