Sri Lankan PM Wickremesinghe arrives on three-day India visit

Sri Lanka reverses $300m China housing deal as PM visits India

At the weekly Cabinet meeting, Mr. Sirisena told Ministers that the Indian intelligence agency was "trying to kill" him, but "Prime Minister Narendra Modi may not be aware of the plan", The Hindu has learnt from sources present at the discussion.

As per the Hindu report, Sirisena also alleged that the government is showing "indifference" to an assassination plot targeting him. This was reported in the local media widely. The Indian PM may not be aware of this as that is often the case.

According to the PMO statement, Modi appreciated the prompt steps taken by Sirisena and the Sri Lankan government to firmly refute the malicious reports by publicly clarifying the matters.

"Any Cabinet paper relating to the infrastructure development projects planned to be implemented in Sri Lanka by the Indian government or Indian companies were not included in the agenda of that Cabinet meeting", said Abeysinghe's statement. "Trump may not be aware of CIA's similar moves".

But senior presidential advisor Shiral Lakthilaka denied the report, calling it false. The Cabinet spokesperson, however, on Wednesday said Sirisena had not expressed opposition to the Eastern Port Terminal deal with India. He reiterated India's emphasis on the "neighbourhood first" policy and the priority attached by him and his government to developing stronger all-round cooperation.

"The President of Sri Lanka stated that he categorically rejected the reports in sections of media about him alluding to the involvement of India in any manner whatsoever in an alleged plot to assassinate the President and a former Defence Secretary of Sri Lanka", said the MEA press release.

But what President Sirisena initially said has become the subject of much speculation in Sri Lanka. He added he greatly values the mutually beneficial ties between the two countries and remained committed to working with Modi for further strengthening the relationship.
