Ten suspected cases of rare nervous system disease in northern IL children

What you need to know about the 'polio-like' illness popping up around the U.S

A disease that causes partial paralysis in children has impacted nine people in IL, the Department of Health announced.

Authorities say they have no confirmed cases of the nervous system condition called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, in NY.

A growing number of cases are being reported across the country.

While officials said the cases occurred in northern IL, more specific locations were not publicly available. "Since 2015, four cases reviewed by CDC experts have been counted in IL", the IDHP stated.

PSG v Red Star game probed over betting
In a statement, the French club said its contact with Red Star for the match had been completely normal. Red Star Belgrade now sit bottom of Group C of their Champions League group.

Earlier this week, six children in Minnesota were diagnosed with this "rare" disease. This year, there have been 38 confirmed cases in 16 states across the U.S.

Other causes have been linked to environmental toxins, genetic disorders and viruses similar to the West Nile virus, according to state health officials. Those who contract AFM face paralysis, long-term health problems and even death. They had symptoms of a respiratory illness in the week before developing symptoms of AFM.

Parents are encouraged to consult a doctor if they see symptoms of the condition, including weakness, eyelid or facial drooping, difficulty moving the eyes, difficulty swallowing or slurred speech, according to the state health department.
