Trump threatens Honduran aid cut over caravan

Hondurans Challenge President Trump's Tough Immigration Stance With 'March of the Migrant' Event

President Donald Trump is threatening to cut off all US aid to Honduras if that government doesn't turn off the "caravan" of immigrants headed toward the United States.

The mass throng on Monday crossed into Guatemala after a standoff with police in riot gear and amid a from the Trump administration that they should not attempt to enter the United States illegally.

Trump says "The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S.is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

The group has swollen in size since leaving San Pedro Sula, one of the world's most risky cities, on Friday.

Pence told Central American leaders at the conference last week that the US would provide more support for efforts to improve economic opportunity and social conditions if they would do the same.

Why: Here's how one Honduran congressman puts it in a (Spanish-language) tweet: "They are not seeking the American dream-they're fleeing the Honduran nightmare".

Guatemala said in a statement on Sunday that it did not promote or endorse 'irregular migration'.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said last month cuts in USA support for Central America would hinder efforts to stem illegal immigration as he welcomed China's growing diplomatic presence in the region as an "opportunity". Then it's on to Mexico and possibly the U.S., though if history holds, numerous migrants will break off and remain in Central America.
