Turkey Won't Allow 'Cover-Up' Of Khashoggi Killing

In his final column for The Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi perhaps presciently pleaded for greater freedom of expression in the Middle East

Chancellor Angela Merkel said late Sunday that Germany can no longer sell arms to Saudi Arabia after journalist Jamal Khashoggi was brutally killed in the kingdom's Istanbul consulate.

Saudi officials originally said Khashoggi, who entered the diplomatic mission on October 2, had left unharmed, before announcing Friday that he was killed inside the building in what they described as an altercation.

In a separate statement on Saturday, the Saudi public prosecutor said a fight broke out between Khashoggi and people who met him in the consulate, leading to his death.

Trump told reporters he thinks Saudi Arabia's explanation that Jamal Khashoggi died after a brawl inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul is credible, adding he does not think he has been lied to during conversations with Saudi Arabia's senior leaders.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with Fox News' Bret Baier, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said that the country is now investigating Khashoggi's death and that the 18 people implicated in his slaying would be punished appropriately.

"It's not possible for the Saudi administration to wiggle itself out of this crime if it's confirmed", Kurtulmus said on Saturday.

In an interview with the Washington Post over the weekend, Trump said that as of now, there was no evidence that points to bin Salman's involvement in Khashoggi's killing. But critics believe the complex scheme that led to Khashoggi's death could not have occurred without the knowledge of bin Salman. Since then, scores of activists, journalists, and civil society protested against the kingdom, demanding justice for Khashoggi. [Turkey's president pressured the Saudis to account for Khashoggi's death] Khashoggi, a resident of Virginia, vanished on the afternoon of October 2, after visiting the Saudi Consulate to obtain documents that would allow him to remarry.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt is considering the "next steps" in Britain's response to the case, officials said.

Mr Hunt has previously warned there would be "consequences" for the UK's relationship with Saudi Arabia if it was found the journalist was murdered.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged "a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Khashoggi's death and full accountability for those responsible", spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

In her statement, Freeland expressed honest condolences to Khashoggi's family and loved ones.

There's been no indication Khashoggi had any immediate plans to return to the kingdom.

It was also reported that 18 Saudi nationals had been arrested.

McKinsey said in a statement that it was "horrified" by the possibility its report was used to target individuals and that it was not prepared for any government entity.

"I will remain a loyal servant to my country for all times", he wrote.
