U.S. ramps up pressure on Saudis over missing journalist

Jamal Khashoggi vanished following a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2

Trump had already signaled he would look into the matter, telling reporters on Wednesday that he would meet with Khashoggi's fiancee.

Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, acknowledged the case - if Saudi responsibility is confirmed - could complicate the USA strategy to contain Iran, in its bid to gain influence throughout the Middle East.

"The traditionally opaque methods used by Saudi Arabia to silence critical journalists constitute grounds for fearing the worst in the case of Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance", said Sophie Anmuth, the head of RSF's Middle East desk.

Turkish officials say they believe he was killed in the consulate, a claim Riyadh has dismissed as "baseless". Saudi officials insisted, albeit without corroborating evidence, that the columnist for The Washington Post left the building through another exit. The only available CCTV footage appears to show him entering the building but not leaving. "Our expectation is that in making your determination you will consider any relevant information, including with respect to the highest ranking officials in the government of Saudi Arabia". "It goes without saying that his family in the Kingdom remain gravely concerned about him, and so are we". "We can not let this happen, to reporters, to anybody". "We don't know what happened yet".

The case has sparked outrage from human rights and journalism groups and threatens to harm ties between Saudi Arabia and the United States, which has demanded answers from the kingdom over the disappearance.

As Corker suggested, the letter does indicate that the strengthening alliance between the Trump administration and the Saudi government may not preclude imposing sanctions.

"It points to the idea that whatever has happened to him, the Saudis - I mean, they've got some explaining to do", Corker said in a Daily Beast report.

The Post, a newspaper to which Khashoggi contributed, cited unnamed USA officials as saying that Saudi officials had been heard discussing a plan to lure Khashoggi from the U.S. state of Virginia, where he resided, and detain him.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told reporters Wednesday that the Senate would "take some action" regarding the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Politico reported.

"If it turns out that suspicions of Saudi involvement in the murder of this journalist are true", Kaine said, "it could be a real sea-change in the relationship between the USA and Saudi Arabia that could affect many things, including US support for what Saudi Arabia is doing in Yemen".

Photos of the fifteen men, checking in to hotels in Turkey's largest city Istanbul surfaced early Wednesday morning, on local Turkish media, more than a week after Jamal Khashoggi went missing inside the Saudi consulate in Turkey's biggest city.

What else does the video show?

About two hours later Aksam showed two vehicles, one of them a black Mercedes Vito van with tinted windows and diplomatic plates, leaving the consulate and entering the auto park of the residence shortly afterwards.

A man reads the Sabah newspaper, with a headline that reads "15-member assassination squad " in Ankara, Turkey.

Turkish officials are hoping to enter the consulate and consul general residence to conduct an investigation. Under the Vienna Convention, foreign diplomatic missions are sovereign territory and a host country can not enter without permission.

In his last interview three days before his disappearance, he said he did not think he would return to Saudi Arabia.

Scarborough stressed that when Trump visited Saudi Arabia a year ago, the Saudi government "made such a fool of him".

The Manbij deal between Turkey and the USA focuses on the withdrawal of the YPG from the city in order to stabilize the region.

When I asked him why he made a decision to live in the United States, he said America was the world's most powerful country, where one could feel the political pulse of the planet.
