Two astronauts from the United States and Russia were forced to make an emergency landing after a Russian booster rocket carrying them into orbit to the International Space Station failed after launch.

NASA said it has been informed by Russian space officials that the crew has made an emergency landing at an unspecified location in Kazakhstan and is in good condition.

The space agency tweeted: "There's been an issue with the booster from today's launch".

A subsequent statement said: "The Soyuz capsule has landed back on Earth carrying two crew members".

"Teams have confirmed the spacecraft separated from the booster and are in contact with the crew as the capsule returns in a ballistic decent mode".

But they got into trouble and were forced to make an emergency exit.

It was the first space mission for Hague, who joined NASA's astronaut corps in 2013.

A Soyuz rocket carrying the Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft lifted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 4:40 a.m. Hague and Ovchinin will spend about six months living and working aboard the orbiting lab.
