World’s longest commercial flight is coming back with gyms and bunks
Singapore Airlines is set to begin non-stop flights between Singapore and NY on Thursday, and the airline has forgone economy seats for the new record-setting flight.
The move to ditch economy will further cement Singapore Airlines as a premium service provider, as they continue to move away from their budget-friendly past image. Tickets for the new route start at £1,639 in Premium Economy and £3,689 in Business Class.
Premium economy fares get three meals at fixed times, with refreshments in between.
Qantas meanwhile is in advanced discussions with Airbus and Boeing over an aircraft capable of making a 20-hour flight between London and Sydney.
Of two possible routes that Singapore Airlines could take to Newark, the airline has already told its passengers that they'll be opting for the NOPAC route, or the North Pacific route. "The combination of the A350's quiet, spacious cabin and SIA's world-renowned in-flight product will ensure the highest levels of passenger comfort on the world's very longest routes". Pilots will get three nights off after reaching NY. The area will overcome 16.7 thousand kilometers. Aviation experts also believe that long-haul direct flights might be the future of air travel, at least for a small niche of fliers.
Singapore Airlines originally flew the route for nine years using the gas-guzzling, four-engine A340-500 before abandoning it in 2013 because high oil prices made the service unprofitable.
Justin Rose backs Padraig Harrington to be Europe's next Ryder Cup captain
Lee Westwood has ruled himself out of contention to be Europe's 2020 Ryder Cup captain and is instead backing Padraig Harrington for the role.
The route was later abandoned due to rising fuel costs - an issue the airline has countered this time around with their fancy new fuel-efficient A350-900 ULR plane.
The A350 is these days considered the go-to plane for long-haul flights, nudging out the A380, which was previously the flagship for such long distance journeys, and which carries up to 850 passengers, more than twice the number of the A350.
Qatar Airways has revealed it has upgraded its order for five new A350-900s by opting to switch to the larger A350-1000 version instead.
It's likely those who booked from India were looking forward to flying an aircraft with no economy class seats. "The plane has high ceilings, sophisticated LED lighting, nearly vertical sidewalls and a low noise level".
But the ultra-long-range version that SIA has bought from Airbus has the longest capability of any aircraft flying today, thanks in part to a slightly modified fuel system.
