World’s longest sea-crossing bridge opens between Hong Kong and China

Chinese Diplomat Allegedly Commits Suicide By Jumping Off Building

Zheng was director of China's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, and was a member of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) top-level Central Committee.

Supporters of the bridge promote it as an engineering marvel, while others see it as a costly political project created to further integrate Hong Kong into the mainland at a time when Beijing is tightening its grip on the semi-autonomous city.

The world's longest sea bridge, connecting Hong Kong, Macau and the Chinese mainland will open to traffic on Wednesday, officials said, after complaints about the secrecy surrounding the project.

Despite the focus on drive time however, private auto owners in Hong Kong will not be able to cross the bridge without a special permit. A single trip on shuttle buses will cost $8-$10, depending on the time of day. "You see it, and you know you're linked up to the motherland", Claudia Mo, said an independent lawmaker who supports greater democracy in Hong Kong.

In 2016, Hong Kong saw 56.7 million tourist arrivals, compared to 37.6 million for the United Kingdom, a much larger country.

Messi injury woe: Barcelona star to miss El Clasico after fracturing arm
Lionel Messi continues to amaze fans after bagging a goal, assist and a broken arm in an epic 18-minute cameo for Barcelona . The Blaugrana confirmed after the game that the 31-year-old suffered a " fracture of the radial bone in his right arm ".

The bridge incorporates 400,000 tons of steel to withstand against natural disasters.

It also includes a 6.7-kilometer (4-mile) submerged tunnel to help it avoid the busy shipping paths over the Pearl River Delta.

The waters under the bridge are home to the Chinese white dolphin, a species whose population is seriously declining, with only 47 of them seen in the year from April 2017 to March 2018.

Nine workers have died in the construction of the bridge and 200 have been injured.
