China's 'Artificial Sun' Marks Breakthrough for Nuclear Fusion

China has taken a big step forward in the quest for nuclear fusion-an nearly unlimited source of clean, cheap energy that would harness power in the same way the Sun does. The tokamak - a type of device that confines hot plasma by using magnetic fields to prevent it from touching and melting its container - is a strong contender in the scientific search for a practical fusion reactor. Apart from being remarkably hot, EAST plasma temperature is also important because it is the minimum temperature scientists believe is required for producing a self-sustaining nuclear fusion reach on Earth. Numerous world's other energy sources, such as coal, produce carbon when processed, which contributes to climate change. Researchers noted that the progress could pave the way for developing clean energy through nuclear fusion, as per China Central Television. This marks China as the first country to design and develop such an equipment on its own, according to China Daily.

Designed, constructed, and assembled mainly by Chinese scientists, the EAST project was approved by China's National Development and Reform Commission in 1998 to conduct fundamental physics and engineering research on advanced tokamak fusion reactors.

Scientists at the Hefei Institute of Physical Science, which is part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have been working on an experiment to achieve nuclear fusion since 2006.

PlayStation 4 Black Friday deals launched
The Black Friday applies to various color models, including the new Blue Camouflage, Magma Red, Midnight Blue, Gold, and Crystal. The headliner is a bundle that includes a PlayStation 4 and the critically-acclaimed new Spider-Man game for just $199.

Fusion is seen as a solution for energy issues as it is clean, sustainable and powerful.

What's surprising is that the scientists working there have now claimed to have produced temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius in the simulator - much more than 15 million degrees Celsius temperature of Sun's core.

Powerful magnets lining the inner walls of EAST then contain the plasma to a tiny area to maximise the chance that the ions will fuse together.
