DACA immigrant program can not immediately end, appeals court rules

Trump administration can't end Obama-era protections for 'dreamers,' federal appeals court rules

A federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled against the Trump administration Thursday, saying the government can not immediately end the DACA program that gives young undocumented immigrants a chance to continue living and working in the US without the threat of deportation.

A three-judge panel of the USA 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco, ruled unanimously in favor of a lower court's preliminary injunction against the administration's attempt to phase out Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

Trump said on Wednesday that he saw potential to work with Democrats, who won control of the House of Representatives this week, but he would have to see how the Supreme Court rules on the issue.

Many of them had no choice about becoming illegal immigrants, as they were brought into the country at a very young age.

DACA is an executive action issued by former President Barack Obama in 2012 to help undocumented individuals who arrived to the country as children to obtain work permits, college degrees and driver's licenses.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed Thursday with a lower court's ruling preventing the Trump administration from ending DACA. It also is set to rule on the administration's appeal of a judge's order blocking Trump's move to put restrictions on transgender people serving in the US military.

SSE and npower merger ‘in a shambles’ after delays over price cap
On Tuesday (6 November) Ofgem announced the price cap will be set at £1,137, which is just £1 higher than the proposed amount. Consumers in Northern Ireland have a separate energy regulator and already have a price cap.

The Trump administration moved to end the program in 2017 after Texas and other states threatened to sue to force an end to the program. Today's decision exemplifies the importance of the courts in protecting our rights and reminds us why we must continue to fight against President Trump's efforts to stack the courts with narrow-minded elitists pursuing a right-wing ideology.

The 9th Circuit ruled that challengers to the decision to end DACA are likely to succeed in their argument that the planned phase-out is illegal. Indeed the Justice Department earlier this month had asked the high court to hear a series of DACA cases even before they were decided in lower courts, saying it was critical the justices tackle the matter this term. The Trump administration announced its intention to rescind the program last September. Trump's action sparked an outcry from immigration advocates, business groups, colleges and some religious leaders.

Trump's decision to end DACA prompted lawsuits across the nation, including one by California.

Federal judges in NY and Washington also have ruled against Trump on DACA.

Federal judges in NY and Washington also have ruled against Trump on DACA. It sent a letter to the circuit last month, saying that if the decision was not handed down by October 31, it would ask the Supreme Court to take up the issue.

Legislation to extend protections for DACA recipients and provide them a path to citizenship failed in Congress this year.
