David Hockney painting fetches record £70m at auction

David Hockney painting auctions for record $90M

A painting by English artist David Hockney sold for $90.3 million during an auction at Christie's in Manhattan on Thursday.

Koons, 63, held the title since 2013 when his orange balloon dog sold for US$58.4 million.

It sold after more than nine minutes of frenzied bidding, according to Agence France-Presse.

The packed sales room in NY broke into applause when the hammer fell, with the buyer's premium and commission taking the final price to $90.3m.

The price went far to boost the success of Christie's post-war and contemporary art auction, which took in a total of $357.6 million, roughly the middle of its expected range, with 41 of the 48 lots on offer finding buyers.

In the picture, a smartly dressed man, standing on the edge of the pool, looks pensively at another figure swimming toward him in glistening waters, with an idyllic mountain view in the background.

Virat Kohli happy to play 'without altercation' against Australia
On a personal level, I don't find the need to go and find these things anymore. "We were always the ones giving it back". And I can vouch for it because we all went through a really hard time in England in 2014.

The standing figure is said to represent Hockney's former partner Peter Schlesinger, whom the British artist met in 1966 while teaching art classes in California.

Hockney's sold his painting for $18,000 in 1972.

Christie's did not name either the seller or the successful bidder.

The 1972 masterpiece combines two of the artist's most celebrated motifs - the swimming pool and the double portrait - and appeared on the cover of the catalogue for David Hockney, which opened at Tate Britain in February 2017 before touring to the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum in NY.

One of Hockney's most celebrated works, it has featured on the cover of a number of monographs about the artist and was part of an worldwide retrospective that celebrated his 80th birthday in 2017.
