Dead Whale Had 1,000 Pieces Of Plastic Inside Its Stomach - Including Flip-Flops

The whale washed ashore in Kapota Island Southeast Sulawesi eastern Indonesia

The makers of "Plastic Britain: On Our Watch" will claim that Britons tend to pass the burden of plastic pollution onto Asian nations where the evidence is more prevalent.

Rescuers from Wakatobi National Park found the rotting carcass of the 9.5-metre sperm whale on Monday in Southeast Sulawesi province.

A dead whale that washed ashore in eastern Indonesia had a large lump of plastic waste in its stomach, including drinking cups and flip-flops - causing concern among environmentalists and government officials in one of the world's largest plastic polluting countries.

Researchers claim plastic fragments have been found in the faeces of people in Europe and Japan, meaning plastic could now exist in the human food chain.

"Although we have not been able to deduce the cause of death, the facts that we see are truly bad", said Dwi Suprapti, marine species conservation coordinator at WWF-Indonesia, in a statement to CNN.

Other plastic waste found in the sperm whale's stomach included plastic bags, plastic bottles, flip-flops and a nylon sack.

She said that because of the animal's advanced state of decay, the organization was not certain that it was the plastic that killed it.

Tumblr iOS App Disappears From App Store
However, it said, the illegal content was discovered during a routine audit. "We immediately removed this content", he added. The disappearance of Tumblr from Apple's App Store made it to news headlines throughout the world a few days ago.

Wakatobi park said it planned to bury the whale carcass at high tide on Tuesday, with the remains to be used for study purposes by the local marine academy.

Last month the European Parliament voted on a complete ban on single use plastics, in a bid to curb pollution of the oceans.

In June, nearly 20 pounds of plastic bags and other plastic trash were pulled from the stomach of a pilot whale that died in Thailand, officials said.

It's the world's second-biggest polluter of plastic, according to a 2015 report in the journal Science. The overall aim is to reduce their plastic waste by 70 percent in the next seven years.

It produces 3.2 million tons of mismanaged plastic waste a year, of which 1.29 million tons ends up in the ocean. The remaining half is either illegally burned or dumped into the country's waters.

The Indonesian co-ordinating minister of maritime affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said that the government had been shocked into action following the discovery of the whale. He vowed that the government would bolster its efforts to stop plastic from reaching oceans in the near future.
