Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: We Need to Confront Trump's Creeping Authoritarianism

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 29 is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress

The vice president took to Twitter to congratulate his brother, who easily won the solidly Republican and heavily white district in the Midwestern state. The first ever openly LGBT governor, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, a bisexual woman, won her re-election bid Tuesday as well. A 2010 study by researchers from the universities of Stanford and Chicago found that female legislators brought back $49 million more for their districts per year than male counterparts.

Texas is sending its first ever Hispanic women to congress, as Veronica Escobar snapped up Beto O'Rouke's old seat and state Sen.

Women are also harder working. The record previously belonged to Elise Stefanik who was elected to Congress at age 30 in 2014.

The Democrats may not have gotten quite the blue wave they were hoping for ー but for women in politics, Election Day was an indisputable success.

And the women elected this year are overwhelmingly Democratic.

In total, 117 women were elected during the 2018 midterm elections - 96 elected to the House, 12 to the Senate and 9 as governor - shattering records and increasing the number of women in power.

In fact, the number of Republican women in Congress, at latest count, will decline in the next session.

Polis is also the state's first Jewish governor.

The right-back is not available for Real's trip to the Czech Republic to face Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on Wednesday. However, Carvajal, who won three Champions League titles with Real under Zinedine Zidane , is standing by Lopetegui.

Overall, the number of Republican women serving in Congress next term will slightly dip, partially because some female incumbents and candidates lost.

Ocasio-Cortez was born in 1989 to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father from South Bronx, growing up in an area she described as where "your zip code determines you destiny".

Women swung far toward Democrats this year, but so did men - at least, relative to where they usually are. Women were 21 points more likely to vote for Democrats than Republicans in House races - 60 percent voted for Democrats, to 38 percent who voted for Republicans.

But within the exit polls there are a few more broad lessons about partisanship by gender in America.

"And just imagine this, it is a conservative woman to boot!" About 6 in 10 voted for the Democrat in the race, compared with 4 in 10 for the Republican candidate.

Nearly 80% of voters in a CNN exit poll said it's very or somewhat important that more women and racial minorities be elected to public office, with two-thirds of white voters agreeing. Though that swing was already in progress, Trump may have accelerated that trend.

"I believe that every American should have stable, dignified housing; health care; education - that the most very basic needs to sustain modern life should be guaranteed in a moral society". Among those who consider that "important", two-thirds voted for Democrats.

They have won almost a quarter of the available positions. "We see problems as opportunities in our state of Colorado".
