FAA issues 737 MAX emergency AD

Lion Air jet had damaged airspeed indicator on last 4 flights Report

Indonesia authorities extended on Wednesday a search for victims of a plane crash last week, when all 189 on board a Lion Air flight were killed, and for the aircraft's second black box, the cockpit voice recorder.

The US planemaker said investigators looking into the Lion Air crash had found that one of the "angle of attack" sensors on the aircraft had provided erroneous data.

Some modern aircraft have systems created to correct the posture of the wings automatically to keep flying safely.

Boeing Co said in a statement that it had alerted pilots to the issue.

The captain and first officer flying from Bali to Jakarta the night before the crash had indicators displaying differences in angle of 20 degrees, KNKT said, but that flight landed safely despite the issues in the air.

Boeing says in the bulletin that if this failure arises, "initially, higher control forces may be needed to overcome any nose-down stabilizer trim". As pilots worked to correct it, it would let them-briefly interrupting the autopilot's control-but then continue attempting to pitch the airplane downward. Aviation systems must account for possibility of misinterpretations of situations and foggy memories of procedures outlined in the manuals that come with these huge, complicated, and incredibly sensitive vehicles.

Trump warns House Democrats against investigating his administration
He was quick to distance himself from losing GOP House members who had been critical of his heated rhetoric, citing Florida Rep. Trump boasted a growing economy but campaigned aggressively in the closing days on a hardline anti-immigration message.

The AD followed Boeing's issuing of an operations manual bulletin (OMB), asking 737 MAX operators to remind pilots of how to handle "erroneous" information from the aircraft's angle of attack sensors.

Lion's earlier admission that the jet had a technical issue - and the captain's request to turn back to the airport minutes before the crash - have raised questions about whether it had faults specific to one of the world's newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes. Pilots flying with an AOA sensor generating erroneous inputs to the system can experience the inability to engage the aircraft's autopilot system, among other problems.

Aircraft and engine manufacturers routinely send bulletins to air carriers noting safety measures and maintenance actions they should take, majority relatively routine. But the urgency of a fatal accident can trigger a flurry of such notices. He said a team had been deployed to examine the plane. Aviation regulators such as the U.S. FAA and the European Aviation Safety Agency often follow such actions by mandating that carriers follow the bulletins.

And in this case the procedure for dealing with the problem it is what is called a "memory item" - pilot's commit them to memory.

"Four days into the review, we have inspected aircraft belonging to seven national airlines and six types of aircraft namely B737-300s", -500s", -800s", -900s, B737 MAX 8s, ATR72-500/600s, and A320-200s. That case didn't involve the angle-of-attack system.

All 181 passengers and eight crew members on board the aircraft died after it crashed into the Java Sea shortly after takeoff from Jakarta.
