French Army seemingly trolls Trump for rain no-show

U.S. President Donald Trump is seen at the Elysee Palace on the eve of the commemoration ceremony for Armistice Day 100 years after the end of the First World War in Paris France

Trump visited the Suresnes American cemetery, just outside Paris, on Sunday and attended the main ceremony on the Champs Elysées, in central Paris.

A handful of White House staffers attended the rainy Saturday ceremony as stand-ins for the USA president, whose campaign team earlier suggested that the weather had caused the presidential helicopter to be grounded while also citing security concerns in what they complained would be a hastily-arranged motorcade to cover the two-hour one-way trip by automobile.

The US President had been scheduled to visit the American war cemetery at Belleau, about 90 kilometres east of the French capital, on Saturday but cancelled the visit.

"They died with their face to the foe and that pathetic inadequate @realDonaldTrump couldn't even defy the weather to pay his respects to The Fallen", tweeted Nicholas Soames, a British Conservative member of parliament and grandson of Winston Churchill.

Trump also passed up Macron's Paris Peace Forum, which began Sunday afternoon, according to reports.

In the wake of stinging criticism directed at Trump, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders repeated a statement about there being "near-zero visibility" for Marine One, the president's personal helicopter, to fly to the cemetery.

Trump later attended the remembrance services with other world leaders to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Another person asked why "they" keep making her wear tights although let's stop and think for a minute. Prince William is said to be more famous than his grandmother, the nation's longest reigning monarch.

President Trump is spending Monday at the White House and had no plans to visit Arlington National Cemetery in northern Virginia as America observes the Veterans Day holiday.

But the explanation didn't cut it for some of Trump's critics who took to Twitter to sound off over the weekend.

His fractious relationship with Europe has driven a wedge between the USA and some of its oldest allies on issues including trade, defence spending and his seeming deference to their looming neighbour to the east, Russia's Vladimir Putin.

The tweets came on the heels of a trip on which Trump seemed isolated from other leaders.

President Trump does seem to have an aversion to rain.

He wrote: "Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the US, China and Russian Federation. Right now, the burden-sharing has been largely on the United States", Mr Trump said.
