'Fundamental reform' of United Kingdom land needed to combat climate change
"With regard to land use, the CCC is absolutely right about the need for fundamental reform to ensure land becomes a more effective carbon store".
Lord Deben, who lives near Debenham, said: "We have an urgent need to change the way we use our land, and that is central to the battle against climate change".
"Climate change is also explicitly among the "public goods" listed in our Agriculture Bill that we want to pay farmers for outside the European Union", added a Defra spokesman. 'Maximise land use'It calls for the Government to move away from current European Union practices after Brexit to a new system where land is "maximised" as a natural store for carbon and as a regulator of natural hazards such as flooding.
Reducing meat consumption in line with the Government's healthy eating guidelines would cut emissions and free up land for other uses, though the report does not call for people to switch to vegetarian diets. "It's low carbon and sustainable as long as we ensure that the sustainable criteria are met". The UK has had some success in decarbonising power, and the overall reduction in emissions since 1990 looks impressive: but when we come to the big questions about how we approach the next and crucial stages of decarbonising energy to play a dominant role in realising our carbon budgets, the locker looks very bare.
It adds the supply of sustainable biomass harvested from United Kingdom sources should also increase.
However, the CCC argues in the report that biofuel uptake should be spurred within the carbon-heavy aviation sector in order to encourage the shift away from fossil fuels.
‘Rabid’ raccoons turn out to be drunk on fermented crabapples
And in 2014, a squirrel went viral after gorging itself on too many fermented crab apples, much like the raccoon in West Virginia. The department noted that if you happen to stumble upon one of these drunk idiots, you should not approach them.
"Well-regulated biomass can provide benefits for forestry, agriculture and our energy system, backing up technologies like wind and solar", he said. "Unsustainable supplies of biomass have no place in our future energy mix".
"A zero carbon city will have many benefits for our citizens, not least enhanced air quality, better public transport networks, lower energy bills and future job opportunities in the growing low-carbon energy sector".
"The potential for biofuels beyond the electricity sector is also set to grow as the United Kingdom heads towards a net-zero emissions economy".
Responding to the publication of the reports, Friends of the Earth campaigner, Guy Shrubsole said: 'This is a wake-up call for a complacent government that we must completely transform the way we use land, to avoid climate breakdown and make space for nature.
On Nov. 15, the U.K. Committee on Climate Change published a report on biomass that has determined sustainably sourced biomass feedstocks can play a fundamental role in decarbonizing the U.K. economy.
